Happy Canada Day!

How old is Canada?

Answer: as old as the rest of the world.

Canada was confederated in 1867 and on July 1, 2011 Canadians celebrate our 144th birthday

Happy Canada Day to all Canadians.

O Canada...
O Canada! Our home and native land
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise
The true north, strong and free
From far and wide, O Canada
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free
O Canada! We stand on guard for thee
O Canada! We stand on guard for thee.

Pour mes amies qui parlent le francais:
O Canada! Terre de nos aieux
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brilliants exploix.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

La Fete du Canada

And an early happy 4th of July to all my American friends.

The original settlers were the Vikings who came over the Bering land bridge during the last ice age, about 10,000 years ago.

NO! Those were the people who became the First Nations peoples of the America and it was more like 13,000 or more years ago (Clovis point and all that).

The Vikings came from Norway in about 1000 AD and built a settlement in Newfoundland.

Well, son of a gun, thanks Fodder. I googled this info and just took one of the replies and believed it.It's a little embarrassing but i'd rather be corrected than leave it so wrong.
You know and maybe had the same teaching as i did as a child in elementary school all about the pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock and we coloured pics of them and turkeys as part of our history class. Then i found out later that was American history we were given. This country has never had much of a real identity, and my blurb didn't help. Just shows to go ya how backwards one of the citizens of this fine country is still so thanks for the correction, i believe you.

Happy Canada Day
Blog Fodder - talk about marketing! Seems even back in the olden days when I went to school marketing was alive and well. Imagine how much money the story about the pilgrims has brought in over the years in cards and Thanksgiving stuff?
Did you ever see a Happy Canada day ad with Vikings hiking over the land bridge in and snow storm?

Catz, that was my bad for the confusion re the bit about the original settlers. When Blog Fodder corrected me i deleted it from my post but not from his response.
Instead of putting picnic, fun and fireworks i chose to go with that google info and copied it because it was short and sweet....well i thought it was at the time but i was too lazy to read all about it.
I trust that Blog Fodder knows his stuff while i just fumble along grabbing easy answers.
Never was big on history or geneology but i think there's something there i didn't quite grasp before. That is my dads family must have been some of those Vikings who Fodder said became the First Nations People. My dads parents were igloo dwelling people from Newfoundland and Labrador.
